Rani Mukherjee’s first entry into mainstream Hindi cinema was in 1997, with Salim Akhtar’s film Raja ki Aayegi Baraat. But she had her first brush with commercial success with the romantic flick Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), directed by Karan Johar. In this film she worked with Shah Rukh Khan and her cousin Kajol. Her performance in this film as the London bred Tina Malhotra was highly acclaimed and she came to the spotlight.
